As a Board member of the Centre Street Food Pantry, I want to highlight the need for donations to our city's food pantries during the summer months. Schools, families, and local organizations take a break or go away during July and August and donations to food pantries drop as a result. Hunger, however, does not take a vacation. At our food pantry at 11 Homer Street in Newton Centre, we are currently feeding more than 100 families per month, totaling more than 250 individuals.
Personal food donations of canned foods, juice, coffee, peanut butter, toiletries are always welcome. We make efforts to obtain fresh produce when available, so if there are extra vegetables in local gardens during the summer and fall, we might be able to distribute it. Drop-offs can be made during the pantry's open hours (every Tuesday 4-7, first Saturday of each month, 11-2) and large donations by appointment. Additional information can be found at www.centrestfoodpantry.org. or by calling 617-340-9554.
We thank the Newton Tab and the citizens of Newton for all they do to support food-insecure families in Newton and surrounding communities.
