October Display Cases at the Newton Free Library

  • September 29, 2011

According to the Newton Free Library's website, the following will be on display in the display cases at the library during the month of October:

Since October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, the two first floor Atrium cases will be filled with an informative display from local agencies who provide much needed services for those who have been faced with issues of domestic violence. For information visit www.thesecondstep.org or www.reachma.org. In addition, you can contact Journey to Safety, the domestic abuse program of Jewish Family and Children's Services, at 781-647-5327. Services are available in Spanish at REACH and Russian at Journey to Safety.

Streamlined Irons (c. 1934-52) will be on display in the three first floor cases. Jay Raymond, author of the book Streamlined Irons, will be speaking at the library on Monday, October 31 at 7:30 p.m. Info: www.streamlinedirons.com or the blog Vintage Electric Irons at vintageelectricirons.blogspot.com or call 215-887-5467.

On view through spring 2012 in the two cases adjacent to the Young Adult Gallery will be a series of collograph boards created by Newton North High School students. Collograph is a print-making method where the plate is built up by collaging various materials onto a cardboard base to create a rich variety of shape and texture from which many prints can be made. During the printing process the boards take on a rich patina and a variety of colors.
