The Equal Justice Coalition honored Representative Ruth B. Balser (D-Newton) with the Beacon of Justice Award yesterday. Rep. Balser was selected for her outstanding support in providing access to justice for low-income Massachusetts residents with critical civil legal problems.

 Rep. Balser’s award was presented by Sandy Moskowitz, chair of the Equal Justice Coalition.

 “We are thankful for Rep. Balser’s extraordinary efforts in support of civil legal aid in the Commonwealth,” Moskowitz said. “Rep. Balser understands the need for the Commonwealth to invest in providing legal services for low-income people facing critical civil legal problems and has been a consistent supporter of that investment.”

 “I am very moved to receive this recognition from the Equal Justice Coalition, whose work is so essential for making sure that our judicial system works for all the people,” said Rep. Balser. “I value their partnership.”

 The Equal Justice Coalition also presented Beacon of Justice awards to: Sen. Stanley C. Rosenberg, President Pro Tempore of the Senate; Sen. Brian A. Joyce, Chair, Senate Committee on Bonding, Capital Expenditures and State Assets; and Rep. Patricia A. Haddad, Speaker Pro Tempore of the House of Representatives.
