Seen crazed turkeys who haunt Newton Centre?

  • October 14, 2012

Has anyone else been terrorized by CRAZY WILD TURKIES in Newton Centre near the Library/Homer & Walnut Sts?  Friday, for second time in 3 months when I was driving in exact same spot, a turkey was trying to attack cars on Homer St near Garland.

I was delayed Friday about 5 minutes. We had to wait our turn to get close to have it terrorize us.

I called Newton Police. They said animal control not coming in until 330pm. I told them they had to send a regular officer over as situation was bad so could not wait that long. They did not seem too concerned, but it was crazy.

One nearby resident told me the turkeys have been around there ever since he arrived in 2006. He said they live in Newton Cemetery & like Garland St., and there is a woodland between homes on Judith and Garland. He thinks they cut across Walnut & Judith into the woodland. then come up Garland to Homer to attack cars.

I am attaching my photo on took Friday

Really?

Yup - just added a photo I took in the same spot on 9/22. We were stuck there for 5 minutes or so while he blocked both lanes. He only moved when a woman got out of her car and approached him. He then walked toward her until she reached the sidewalk on Garland - then he turned around and resumed his post in the middle of the street.

I have a photo of one on my front lawn on Albemarle Road. What a surprise. I stayed inside until it left for fear of "the attack of the wild turkey."

I live right where you took that photo and see the turkeys out terrorizing people and cars all the time. I have to say, it is hilarious. They regularly cause traffic jams and attack passers by. People get out and take videos, honking ensues, the turkeys charge people's cars and anyone who dares stick their head out their car window.

The turkeys are basically harmless for adults. They would just peck you and it's not very hard. For kids its scary for sure. There is one particular tom who seems to be the lead agitator. He's big and has a really blue head. My wife did battle with him for about five minutes over the weekend with her umbrella. If they come in our back yard I let our dog out and they fly up into the trees.

Thank you all for the information. Shawn, I agree I wouldn't be too worried as an adult about the turkey pecks. But what does seem worrisome is what might happen to some pedestrian or bicyclist or kid who may run into traffic trying to get away.

On the flip side, it is a little hilarious and the 5 minutes I lost on Friday morning is nothing.

Every time I look at this story, I think of Steve Martin and Dan Aykroyd on SNL as the two "Wild and Crazy Guys..." only now I think of turkeys wearing those godawful plaids-and-stripes and the silly hats! :)

Just heard over the scanner police being called to Walnut Street for a "vicious turkey attacking people" in the area. The caller quickly downgraded the "attack", though, and it seemed the turkey was just in someone's yard and refused to go away. Police said it was not a priority, according to the scanner, and went to handle another call.

I grew up in rural Pennsylvania. We saw flocks of turkeys almost all the time, and they never approached or bothered people. You know why? Because people shot and ate them! One correction: they became awfully scarce after the first day of hunting season.
