Howard was also survived by granddaughters Samantha Parker Sullivan of St. Louis, Mo. and Leahnora Turner Hill of Newton; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
Parents Lillie and James Smith predeceased him.
Born in Lousiville, Ky., Howard graduated from Knoxville College in 1969 with a dual major in Biology and Chemistry. His love for football directed the beginning of his career as he was recruited by the Cleveland Browns of the NFL and played for two years as a strong safety.
Howard also served as an OPEIU Officer of the Professional Employees IInternational Union, Union Local #453, Compto Officer of the MBTA, founder of the Bigelow Middle School Keystone Partners Mentor/Mentee Program, Senior Project Manager for the MBTA in Jamaica Plains, and a member of the men's chorus and a deacon at the Myrtle Baptist Church in Newton.
Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at Myrtle Baptist Church, 21 Curve St., West Newton, MA 02465 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 7 p.m. Interment will be in the Newton Cemetery, 791 Walnut St., Newton Centre, on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made in Howard's memory to the Myrtle Baptist Church Scholarship Fund.
