NORTHEAST SUMMIT FOCUSED ON IMPROVING SYSTEMS OF STROKE CARE
BOSTON - The 7th Annual Summit of The NorthEast Cerebrovascular Consortium (NECC) will bring together over 300 stroke professionals from across eight states on October 18th and 19th in Boston. The two-day event will include educational plenary and breakout sessions focusing on Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Rehabilitation, and Stroke Coordinators which will address gaps in the stroke system of care. The overall goal of the event is to help practitioners and states improve their stroke systems of care through collaboration and education.
The NECC is a voluntary-led regional consortium that has developed its own structure and guidelines with the support of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA). Over 50 volunteers make up the groups and committees who work year round to develop a strategic plan and implement pilot projects to address recommendations around seven areas including prevention, community education, notification and response of EMS, acute stroke treatment, subacute care and secondary prevention, rehabilitation and continuous quality improvement.
Newton resident, Lee H. Schwamm, MD, FAHA, Vice Chairman, Department of Neurology and Director of TeleStroke & Acute Stroke Services at Massachusetts General Hospital is the founder of The NECC and a member of the Advisory Group. Dr. Schwamm also serves as a Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School.
With the support of volunteers like Dr. Schwamm, and the AHA/ASA, The NECC has become a national role model of improving stroke systems of care implementation and coordination across the states. The project, data, successes, barriers and experiences from The NECC is published and shared with other groups and professionals at national meetings such as the International Stroke Conference, American Academy of Neurology, and Quality of Care and Outcomes Research.
The NorthEast Cerebrovascular Consortium summit will be held at the Westin Boston Waterfront hotel. Registrations will be taken through October 18th.
