Alderman Plans to Challenge Newton's Mayor in Upcoming Election

It appears that Newton's November mayoral race will be contested.

Ward 3 Alderman Ted Hess-Mahan said Friday that he intends to challenge incumbent Mayor Setti Warren in November's municipal election, according to the Village 14 blog.

Additionally, Hess-Mahan retweeted a question about his potential run, further confirming his plans.

According to Village 14, Hess-Mahan confirmed he will run for both the mayor's seat as well as for re-election to the Ward 3 alderman-at-large seat.

It is unconfirmed at this time whether Hess-Mahan has withdrawn nomination papers from the Election Commission Office, but Village 14 reports that he did speak with City Clerk David Olson about whether he could run for both offices and was assured that he could.

Hess-Mahan told Village 14 that he believes Warren has done a "good job" as mayor in some aspects, but has fallen short in others, including "the administration’s policies around affordable housing and the distribution of CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) funds."
