Allan Duncan MacDougall, 69, 'Legendary' Newton North Teacher

MacDougall was an American History teacher who joined Newton North staff in 1970.

 

Allan Duncan MacDougall, 69, a well-known and beloved teacher at Newton North, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012 after a sudden illness.

According to his obituary, MacDougall was born in Worcester and attended Harvard University, where he earned a undergraduate degree in History and a masters degree in teaching. He also earned a second masters degree in American civilization from Brandeis University. 

MacDougall joined the Newton North community in 1970 and soon became a popular and much-loved teacher among the students and staff. His American Popular Culture class was "legendary," his obituary said.

MacDougall met his wife, JoEllen Hillyer, at Newton North and in 1975 they started the annual Rocco's Rock 'n Roll Review, which became the well-known Ric and Rocco Show. 

In addition to JoEllen, MacDougall is survived by his daughters Kate Berrigan MacDougall, of Salem, and Cynthia Felice Crisafulli of Arlington, VA. He is also survived by his brother John of Seattle, WA; aunts Carmella Farina of South Braintree and Mary Locantore of Worcester; brother and sisters in law and many beloved nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and cousins, his obituary read.

A funeral service for MacDougall was held on Oct. 25 in the Memorial Church in Harvard Yard and a second, larger celebration of life will be held at a later date.

I had Mr. MacDougall as a teacher when I attended NNHS from 1997-2001. He was a fantastic story teller, funny and really cared about his students.
