Bertucci's Closes in Newton's Atrium Mall

According to the restaurant's answering machine, the Bertucci's closed May 14.

The Atrium Mall lost one of its anchor restaurants this month as Bertucci's has closed up shop in the ailing Chestnut Hill retail center.

According to a report in Boston Business Journal, the restaurant's exit brings the mall's occupancy rate to under 20 percent, with less than 12 stores and two restaurants left in the space.

The answering machine at the Atrium Mall Bertucci's says the restaurant closed on May 14. The message thanks customers for "all the memories" over the last decade in Chestnut Hill.

The closing of Bertucci's is the most recent blow to the struggling property, which has seen a number of stores close or relocate across the street to the Mall at Chestnut Hill.

Over the last few months, stores including Gap, GapKids, Creatoyivity and Pottery Barn Kids have left the mall.

The property, which is owned by Simon Properties, is reportedly up for sale.

Meanwhile, the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center, located just across the street, is planning a huge development of new stores and restaurants including a Pinkberry, Sports Club/LA and Cinema de Luxe.

Construction is also ongoing next to the Atrium Mall at the future site of the Chestnut Hill Square retail development.

That is a really interesting idea, Tania -- I hadn't thought of something like that before.

Another great idea -- something, anything, that stays open past 8 p.m. Most places in Newton close by when some people would like to go out for a late cup of joe. But please, no banks!

I suppose it wouldn't work to become all pop-up stores, since you (generally) need street traffic, but that's a great building; there has to be an answer...
