Congressman Barney Frank Gets Hitched in Newton
The ceremony was held on Sat., July 7 at the Newton Marriott.
Wedding bells were ringing in Newton yesterday as local Congressman Barney Frank married longtime partner Jim Ready at the Boston Marriott Hotel.
According to an Associated Press report, more than 300 friends, family members and colleagues attended the ceremony, which was officiated by Governor Deval Patrick.
MSNBC noted in its report that this is the first same-sex marriage involving a sitting congressman. Frank, 72, has been openly gay since the mid-1980s.
Ready, 42, owns a small business for carpentry, painting and other "general handyman" services, according to the AP. The Ogunquit, Maine resident also works as a photographer.
During his tenure as a congressman, Frank has worked as a top-ranking member and former chairman of the House Financial Services Committee. However, following the state's congressional redistricting, Frank announced late last year his plans to retire after more than 30 years serving the Fourth Congressional District.
During a press conference held in November, Frank said he plans to spend his retirement in both Newton and Maine.
Since his announcement to retire, a number of politicians have jumped at the chance to replace the well-known Newton Democrat including Republican Sean Bielat, Democrat Joe Kennedy III, Brookline Republican Elizabeth Childs, Fall River RepublicanDavid Steinhof, LaRouche Democrat Rachel Brown and Newton Democrat Herb Robinson.
