Crystal Lake Closed Due to Algae Bloom

The visibility of the water has declined to less than three feet, the city says.

The city has closed today due to an algae bloom in the water, according to the city's website

All swimming activities and lessons are canceled for Monday, the city said, and the lake will not be reopened until the state has completed an assessment of the water.

Due to the algae bloom, visibility in the water has been reduced to less than three feet, the notice said. 

According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, algae blooms form in fresh water when blue-green algae grows quickly and forms "scum mats" on the water. Some types of algae can produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals.
