The city's Planning & Development Department announced Friday that it has extended the deadline for the Newtonville Banner Competition to Tues., July 31. 

The competition, which was launched in June, is open to artists of all ages who live, work or attend school in Newton. 

According to the contest website, designs by the winning artist will decorate 20 lamp posts along Walnut Street and Washington Street. The banners will be five feet tall and two feet wide.

The design contest and banners aim to identify the village as a whole, the website said, and help join two sections of Newtonville that are separated by the Mass Pike overpass. The city is also hoping the banners will "compliment" other beautification efforts going on in Newtonville. 

Artists may submit up to three designs. Submissions must be dropped off at the Planning Department in hard copy before Tues., July 31 at 5 p.m.
