According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake has been downgraded to a 4.0.

In addition, Governor Deval Patrick has issued a statement on tonight's 'quake:

Many Massachusetts residents felt the effects of an earthquake tonight. According to MEMA, which is monitoring events and has briefed me, the quake was centered some 30 miles outside of Portland, Maine. So far, we have no reports of injury or damage in Massachusetts. MEMA will continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents should use caution if they encounter any damage and take a minute to check in on neighbors, family and friends.

An apparent 4.6 magnitude earthquake hit the Northeastern United States earlier this evening, shaking the Boston area and the city of Newton. 

The United States Geological Survey website says the earthquake's epicenter was 6 kilometers south of Lake Arrowhead, Maine and occurred at around 7:12 p.m.

Several users on Twitter have reported feeling it here in Newton around 7:15 p.m.

According to followers on our Newton Patch Facebook page, residents felt the 'quake in West Newton and Newton Centre. Reports on Twitter also indicate residents feeling the shaking in Chestnut Hill and Auburndale.
