Filene's Basement Site in Newton Will Go to Auction Next Month

The property at 215 Needham St. will go to public foreclosure auction on Sept. 13.

Less than a year after the Filene's Basement chain closed up shop, its former store in Newton is headed for the auction block. 

According to a report in the Boston Herald, the property at 215 Needham St. will be sold at a public foreclosure auction on Sept. 13 following a mortgage default.

Newton-based Paragon Properties has owned the property for more than 20 years, the Herald reported. The site includes the former retail building as well as a three-floor parking garage. 

In November 2011, . Syms Corp., which owned Filene's Basement, also filed for Chapter 11 at that time.

Following the bankruptcy announcement, Filene's and Syms began liquidation of their operations, which consisted of 46 stores between the two companies. By the end of the year, all Filene's Basement locations were closed. 

, which opened in May 2012, is also located at 215 Needham St. The Herald article did not indicate whether the auction would affect the restaurant.
