Five Things You Need to Know Today: Jan. 20

Movie night, local basketball and ice skating.

1. Movie night. The Scandinavian Living Center hosts a movie night every Friday at 7 p.m. Tonight's movie is My Best Friend's Wedding.

2. Go Tigers! The Newton North girls' varsity basketball team will face Needham in a home match tonight at 5:30 p.m.

3. Newtonville ice rink. The Newtonville ice rink opened yesterday! The rink is located behind the Albemarle softball field and will stay open as long as the weather stays cold. Check back to Newton Patch or the Newtonville Ice Rink website for updates on skating status.

4. Blog on Patch. Did you know Newton Patch has a blog section for local residents, business owners and community leaders? Local Voices is a section of our site where the editor steps aside and the community says what it wants. Interested in sharing your thoughts and opinions with a Patch blog? Do you have a blog that need a new set of readers? Read more about how you can get a Local Voices blog here.

5. It's that time of year...The Newton Senior Center and AARP are working together to help local seniors put together their 2011 tax returns. Starting Monday (Jan. 23), the senior center will be accepting calls to make appointments. The appointments will begin on Feb. 6 and will be scheduled during the senior center's regular hours (8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.). Check the Newton Senior Center January newsletter for more info.
