Five Things You Need to Know Today: March 13

A blood drive, a 5% day at Whole Foods and the Newton Veterans Center opens.

1. In case you missed it...Newton voters passed the $11.4 million override package yesterday. We'll have more stories for you later today, including coverage from an override press conference this afternoon. Stay tuned!

2. Veterans Center opening. Mayor Setti Warren will be joined by Lt. Gov. Tim Murray and Secretary of Veterans Services Coleman Nee for the opening of a Veterans Center at Newton's American Legion Post 440 this morning. The first event at the center will be a 'Heroes for Hire' Job Fair, which will also take place today.

3. Blood drive. The Newton Free Library will host a blood drive today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

4. Get unplugged! The Newton Community Service Center is reminding residents to stay 'unplugged and connected' as much as possible this month. Tonight's 'unplugged' tip/event: No homework and no night meetings. Take a look at the full calendar for more tips and ideas.

5. 5% day at Whole Foods. The Whole Foods at the corner of Beacon Street and Walnut Street will host a "5% Day" for NewTV today. Five percent of your total receipt at that store today will be donated to NewTV in support of the station's youth intern and scholarship programs.

Disclaimer: Local Editor Melanie Graham occasionally teaches a 'Social Media & You' course at NewTV.
