Five Things You Need to Know Today: Nov. 11
A special thanks today to all of the nation's veterans.
1. Thank a veteran. It's Veterans Day, so make sure you find someone in uniform and give him/her a special thanks for their service.
2. It goes to 11. That's right, it's 11/11/11. A rare date on the calendar also something of a holiday for Spinal Tap fans. Is today a special day for you? Getting married? Is it your 11th birthday? Newton Patch wants to hear your story. Email Melanie.Graham@patch.com.
3. Veterans Day Ceremonies. The city of Newton will hold its Veterans Day ceremony at the American Legion Post 440 starting at 11 a.m. Over at Boston College, a memorial service will be held at 9:30 followed by a ceremony near the BC Veterans' Memorial. Check our preview story for more details.
4. School's out...for today anyway, due to the holiday. City Hall offices and the Newton Free Library will also be closed.
5. On schedule! All trash, recycling, yard waste and bulky item pick-up will run on schedule this week despite the holiday. The Rumford Avenue Recycling Depot will be closed today but will be open tomorrow (Saturday) from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
