Five Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 30

Cleaning up after the storm, last farmers' market and Carr School discussion.

UPDATED 9:45 a.m. with info about the farmers' market.

1. Aftermath of Sandy. As of midnight, just over 5,000 Newton NSTAR customers were still without power. If you know of any areas in the city without power, make sure you let us and your neighbors know. There's still plenty of information available in our Newton Hurricane Info Center and we will be updating with more news later today. Make sure you . 

2. Newton Public Schools closed. Due to the storm damage, Newton Public Schools will remain closed today. Newton City Hall will reopen, though, and trash/recycling pickup will resume (one-day delay schedule).

3. Last Cold Spring Park farmers' market! According to the city's Parks & Recreation Facebook page. The last farmers' market for the fall will NOT open today, due to the hurricane. 

4. Distractology 101. Aronson Insurance is bringing a state-of-the-art "Distractology 101" tour to Newton North High School during the week of Oct. 30 – Nov. 3, 2012. The campaign features a 36-foot-long, neon-yellow mobile classroom outfitted with high-tech driving simulators designed to give new drivers the chance to experience the perils of distracted driving, including texting while driving.

5. Public Facilities. The Board of Aldermen's Public Facilities Committee will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in room 209 at City Hall. The committee will discuss and vote on the site plan for renovations to the Carr School (Newton Cultural Center), which will act as swing space for students during reconstruction of Angier Elementary.
