Former Newton Police Chief Cummings Could Receive $129K Pension

Cummings was fired last month after the city ruled his behavior toward another department employee was "unbecoming a police officer."

Former Newton Police Chief Matthew Cummings, who was fired last month, could receive a pension amount higher than all other current retired employees on Newton's books.

The pension, totaling $129,000, would be the largest yearly pension amount in the city's system, the Boston Globe reported Thursday.

The former chief applied for his retirement last week, the Globe reported.

Cummings, a 30-year veteran of the department, was fired on Oct. 11 on the basis that his actions and comments toward his former secretary and a fellow officer were "unbecoming a police chief."

Cummings' attorney, Timothy Burke, told the Globe Cummings still plans to file an appeal of the city's decision to fire him.
