'Keys to Success' Program Will Redo Car Giveaway at Newton North

The original winner, Vanessa Battista, chose a scholarship instead of the car she won last week.

Just a few days after , the Keys to Success Program has decided to redo the contest at Newton North in order to be fair to students who missed the contest on Friday.

According to spokeswoman Kelli Fletcher, Keys to Success decided to hold the "Key Off" event again after finding out that a few of the selected participants missed the event due to AP exams.

A select number of students were chosen for the Key Off event last Friday, May 11. Each student was given a car key and the student whose key started the engine got to keep the car (a Honda Civic).

Fletcher said Keys to Success wanted to make sure the contest was completely fair to all those who should have participated. A second Key Off event, with the same rules, will be held sometime next week Fletcher, said.

Battista, who had the winning key, was given the choice of keeping the car or taking a $5,000 scholarship, Fletcher said. Battista decided to take the scholarship.

The Keys to Success program was launched by the Village Automotive Group and recognizes students who excel in community service, school attendance and improvement in grades. The year-long program tracks the students' progress and work and those who show the best efforts receive prizes as well as the chance to participate in the Key Off event.
