Feb. 21 - A fire broke out early Monday morning on Waverley Avenue and was a two-alarm blaze by 1:30 a.m. By the end of the night, the fire had grown to four alarms and took the life of one woman inside. Beth Deare, an award-winning producer and local educator, tragically passed away in the blaze.
Jan. 13 - West Newton after one of the many blizzards that hit the northeast during the 2010-2011 winter season.
Sept. 6 - This photo was taken as part of Newton Patch's 9/11 anniversary coverage. Ten years ago, Afkham Salie (pictured above, left) lost what he called the “glue” in his family. On Sept. 11, 2001, Afkham’s 28-year-old sister Rahma boarded a plane with her husband, Michael Theororidis. The couple, newly married and seven months pregnant, left Boston Logan International Airport on board American Airlines Flight 11 on their way to a wedding in Los Angeles. Afkham’s sister Rahma, a Wellesley College graduate, lived with their parents in Newton for many years. Just a short time before boarding that plane, Rahama had moved out of her parent’s home and relocated with her new husband to a place in Boston. “She was extraordinary,” Afkham told Patch earlier this year. Afkham and his parents -- Haleema (pictured above) and Ysuff – are a Muslim family who hail from Sri Lanka. The family runs L’Aroma Café & Bakery in West Newton, a warm, light-filled, hidden gem tucked away in a corner between Washington Street and Chestnut Street. A sister café, also run by his family, sits on Newbury Street in Boston’s Back Bay.

The fire in Newton Corner was really tragic to those who survived.
