Mayor Warren Appoints Newton's First Chief Information Officer

Robert Barrett previously served as chief information officer for A123 Systems and Babcock Power, Inc.

announced today the appointment of Robert Barrett as the city's first Chief Information Officer (CIO).

According to a press release issued by Warren's office, Barrett will "lead the implementation" of a comprehensive information technology plan for the city and its operations. Barrett will also oversee innovation and technology across the city as the leader of Newton's Information Technology (IT) Department. 

“Robert will be leading my administration’s vision for a comprehensive IT strategy across city departments,” Warren said in the press release. “He brings a wide range of experience in the field of information technology, and an innovative and strategic approach to IT. I am pleased to welcome Robert to the city of Newton, and look forward to working with him.”

The new CIO position was a recommendation made by the city's IT Advisory Committee, which was formed by Warren's administration more than a year ago. 

Prior to coming on board as Newton's new CIO, Barrett worked as chief information officer for A123 Systems and Babcock Power, Inc.

“I am honored to join the city of Newton in this important new role,” Barrett said in the press release. “The city has made great steps in delivering workflow improvements, online services, and open communication to its residents. The challenges ahead are to create a coordinated strategy to support these opportunities across all departments, developing consistent standards, resources, and processes in order to build a reliable and cost-effective IT infrastructure to support the rapidly growing demands. I am looking forward to working with the city’s staff and residents.”
