Needed: Volunteers Passionate about Leaf Blowers

The Leaf Blower Task Force is still in need of volunteer members.

The Board of Aldermen is still looking for citizens willing to serve on a Leaf Blower Task Force established by the board last spring.

The charge of the task force is to:

review and evaluate research provided by various sources on the health and environmental impacts from exhaust emissions, particulate matter, dust, and noise caused by the use of leaf blowers and other landscaping equipment, various approaches to regulating the use thereof including ordinances and by-laws adopted by other municipalities, complaints and concerns of Newton residents and operators, and the financial and operational impacts of various regulatory schemes, including enforcement challenges.

The board is seeking a number of individuals, including one person from each ward, to serve on the LBTF. If possible, the individuals should have experience with or exposure to "exhaust emission, fugitive dust and noise resulting from the operation of landscaping equipment," according to the charge.

Interest in and expertise with public health, environmental protection and other relevant fields are also desireable.

In addition to a volunteer from each ward, the LBTF will be comprised of one individual from a landscaping firm in Newton, one from a public or private Newton golf course, one from a major institution (Mt. Ida College, Boston College, etc.) and an appointed alderman.

The task force will ultimately make a report and recommendations to Aldermen regarding possible changes to the city's codes related to the use of landscaping power equipment, including leaf blowers.

If you're interested in serving on the LBTF or another board with openings, volunteer online or take a look at how to apply via mail.
