New '2ovens' Restaurant Planning to Open in Newton

The restaurant is part of the Bertucci's Corporation, but will not be strictly Italian food.

A Massachusetts-based restaurant chain is hoping to try something different with a brand new restaurant concept on Needham Street in Newton.

The new eatery -- 2ovens -- will be located at 300 Needham St., pending approval from the Newton Board of Aldermen.

"[2ovens] will cater to how people eat today," Bertucci's Vice President of Development James Quackenbush tells Newton Patch.

Quackenbush says the 90-seat eatery is "the first of its kind" and will feature two ovens in the center of the restaurant. The ovens, which are imported from Italy, will be the only tools used to cook food in the establishment.

There will be no microwaves or fryers, Quackenbush says, just the two ovens cooking food "right in front of you."

One of the two ovens will be dedicated to cooking pizzas, Quackenbush says, and since the ovens cook at very high temperatures, the pizzas are finished in "under three minutes."

Although 2ovens is an offshoot of Bertucci's Italian Restaurant, the menu at the new venture will not be strictly Italian, Quackenbush says. Patrons will be able to choose from a variety of roasted meats, fish and vegetables all cooked in one of the two ovens.

The restaurant will also offer fresh salads, which patrons can top with the roasted meat and fish.

"We're really very excited about [2ovens]," Quackenbush says, adding that the new concept is a "great fit" for the Bertucci's family.

Bertucci's currently has a location on Centre Street in Newton corner. A second location in the Atrium Mall recently closed as the mall transforms into the new Atrium Center.

The Board of Aldermen's Land Use Committee will consider a special permit for the new 2ovens restaurant at a public hearing on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Bertucci's Corporation is looking to get approval for a restaurant in the mixed-use site, which also includes a Chipotle, EZ Storage and Eastern Mountain Sports.

The permit would also allow the city to waive the 25 required parking stalls for the new restaurant.

If all goes well with the aldermen, Quackenbush says the new 2ovens restaurant on Needham Street will open sometime during the first quarter of 2013 (January-March).

In addition to the Newton location, Quackenbush says the company is looking to open other 2ovens locations in Massachusetts, including one in Shrewsbury.
