Newton Jeweler Keeps Olympic Promise

The U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team will have more than just their gold medals to show off.

When the U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team returns to the States later this month, they five girls will be coming home with not just gold, but also diamonds, sapphires and rubies.

After making a pair of custom red, white and blue earrings for Needham Olympian Aly Raisman, Adamas Fine Jewelry in Newton Highlands is planning to make four more pairs.

Adamas Co-Owner Anto Aboyan told WHDH-Channel 7 yesterday that he is "more than happy" to send along earrings for the rest of the team -- fulfilling the promise he made when he sent Raisman off with the first pair.

The jeweler promised the sapphire, ruby and diamond earrings to the girls if they brought home the gold medal. And, after yesterday's stellar performance in the team final, Raisman and her teammates did just that

The five-member team, led by Raisman, earned a total score of 183.596, beating out second-place Russia, with 178.530, and third-place Romania, with 176.414.

With the win on Tuesday, Team USA earned the country's second ever team gold medal for women's gymnastics. The United States first won gold in 1996.

Raisman wore the earrings during some Olympic pre-interviews and also had them on when the gymnastics team was featured in Sports Illustrated last month.

Aboyan, who designed the earrings, told WHDH Raisman hasn't taken the earrings off since the start of the Olympic competitions -- something the Lincoln Street jewelry store did not expect.

According to the WHDH report, the jeweler hopes to get the girls the earrings before the closing ceremonies on August 12.
