Newton Mayor to Host "Hoops for Our Troops" Event

The event will be held May 19 at Newton South High School.

Mayor Setti Warren will celebrate Armed Forces Day next month with a special celebrity basketball game and veterans services event at Newton South High School.

The May 19 "Hoops for Our Troops" event will include a fair promoting job opportunities, programs and benefits for veterans returning from service. A number of local celebrities and veterans will also take part in a friendly basketball game.

According to information from Warren's office, the mayor will be joined by Celtics Co-Owner Steve Pagliuca as well as NBA Hall of Famer Tommy Heinsohn, former Briun Lyndon Byers, Olympic gold medalist Molly Schaus and Miss Massachusetts Molly Whalen.

Veterans who are interested in participating in the day's events can register online for a chance to win a spot on the basketball team. Veterans can also enter to win contests, sign up for information from employers who will be at the fair as well as schedule a meeting with a local veterans service officer.

Members of the general public are encouraged to attend the event to donate supplies for care packages sent to soldiers. A number of non-profits will also be on hand for donations.

Veterans who register online can also request care packages for specific soldiers serving abroad.

The May 19 event and fair begins at 12:30 p.m., with the basketball game tip-off starting at 1:30 p.m.
