Newton Officials Prepare for Blizzard, Urge Residents to Stay Home [VIDEOS]

Feb. 8, 2013 - Mayor Setti Warren urges residents to stay off the roads and stay home during the blizzard. Warren held a press conference Friday morning at the city's Emergency Command Center at the Newton Fire Headquarters.
Feb. 8, 2013 - Fire Chief Bruce Proia updates residents on what numbers to call if they have a city service request or a power outage. All city service requests should be called in to 617-796-1000 and all NSTAR power outages can be called in to 800-592-2000. All downed wires should be treated as live and emergencies should be called in via 911.
Feb. 8, 2013 - DPW Commissioner Dave Turocy says the city will have more than 150 vehicles out on the roads during the storm. Turocy said the city's salt supply should be fine, despite the fact that the sheds were destroyed during Hurricane Sandy. Mayor Setti Warren also urged residents to stay off the roads and to abide by the parking ban, which starts at noon, in order to give DPW the ability to clear roads.
Feb. 8, 2013 - Newton Health Commissioner Dori Zaleznik says the city has not officially put any shelters in place for the storm, but will try to keep track throughout the blizzard how many neighborhoods are without power. For the time being, Zaleznik said it is important to keep as many people off the roads as possible and after the storm winds down, the city will determine whether it needs warming stations, a place to provide hot food or a shelter.
Feb. 8, 2013 - Interim Police Chief Howard Mintz urges residents to make any 911 calls from a land line, if possible. Cell phone calls are routed through the State Police and could increase response time. In addition, Mintz urged residents to stay off the roads, as cars could get stuck and create safety hazards for emergency responders.
