Newton Police Hand Out 20+ Violations During Crosswalk Sting

Local police held crosswalk stings on Beacon and Lincoln Streets earlier this week, resulting in 25 infractions and one arrest.

Newton Police counted a total of 25 infractions during a crosswalk sting held Wednesday, 16 of which were handed out on Beacon Street near .

"It shows there is a definite problem there," said Newton Police Capt. Howard Mintz.

In total, Mintz said 23 of 25 drivers were issued a civil complaint for not stopping, which can be resolved by paying a fine. One driver pulled over for not stopping at the crosswalk also received a criminal complaint for having an expired license. 

Another driver, a West Roxbury man, was arrested after police pulled him over for not stopping in the crosswalk near BC. Fabio Oliviera, 29, of 134 Grove St., was arrested for driving with a suspended license, police reports said.

Mintz said because the crosswalk near BC was such a problem area, the police will likely do another sting near there during the first week in October. 

After conducting the crosswalk enforcement near Boston College, Newton Police then moved on to 51 Lincoln St., where they conducted a similar sting and handed out nine citations.
