Newton Pols Mull State Rep., Governor's Council Seats

Alderman-at-Large Greer Tan Swiston has said she will be looking into a run for the 11th Middlesex District seat. Newton resident Tom Sheff has said he is also eyeing a spot on the Governor's Council

While recent political news has focused on the race for U.S. House and Senate seats, some Newton pols are gearing up for the 2012 state elections. 

told Newton Patch last week she is considering a run for state representative in the 11th Middlesex District. 

Swiston, a Republican, said in an email that she is not ready announce candidacy, but that she has filed forms with the Office of Campaign and Political Finance to create a committee to raise funds and explore a campaign for the seat.

State Rep. Kay Khan currently represents the 11th Middlesex District, which covers most of the north side of the city. Khan, a Democrat, has represented the district since 1995. 

Meanwhile, announced Sunday his plans to form an exploratory committee to look at a run for the Third District seat on the Governor's Council.

“I am exploring a potential candidacy for Governor's Council because it is time to bring a common sense approach to the important work that needs to be done on behalf of our district and the Commonwealth,” Sheff said in his announcement. “Through my experience as a businessman and activist, I intend to do just that.”

Democrat Marilyn Devaney currently represents the Third District on the Governor's Council. If she runs again this year, Sheff's candidacy would force a primary on Sept. 6.

Sheff said in his statement he will be meeting with "as many voters and community groups as possible to discuss a potential candidacy."
