Newton Rep. Kay Khan Kicks Off Reelection Campaign

As she gets ready to face a local Republican challenger, Newton State Rep. Kay Khan launched her reelection campaign last week for the 11th Middlesex District seat.

Khan announced her campaign at a Vista Avenue home in Auburndale on Thurs., June 14 surrounded by supporters and fellow politicians.

“We cannot afford to lose Kay’s commitment to Newton and her access to important state agencies and resources that improve the quality of life in the city and the Commonwealth,” fellow Newton State Rep. Ruth Balser said in a press release.

Khan, a Lower Falls resident, is currently in her ninth term at the State House and serves as the House chair of the Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities. She is also the co-founder of the .

In the fall, Khan will face GOP candidate and Ward 3 Alderman-at-Large Greer Tan Swiston. Swiston, a West Newton resident, .

State Representative Kay Khan (D - 11th Middlesex) kicked off her re-election campaign before an enthusiastic crowd of supporters at 74 Vista Ave. in Auburndale on June 14th.

In her ninth legislative term, Kay Khan is a strong voice for policies and legislation to stimulate the economy, safeguard the environment, sustain families and enhance community life.  Kay has been a determined advocate for civil and human rights and currently serves as the House Chair of the Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities.

As State Representative, Kay has successfully lobbied for three major Newton sound barriers along the Mass Pike and Route 128, secured state funding for major improvements to the Lower Falls Community Center and initiated an accessibility plan for the Auburndale Commuter Rail Station.  Recently, Lt. Governor Murray joined Mayor Warren in celebrating another of Kay’s community initiatives –conversion of an unused railroad bridge into a beautiful new pedestrian walkway over the Charles River in Lower Falls.

Kay also is the co-founder of the Newton Cultural Alliance promoting the city’s many arts and cultural organizations. A psychiatric nurse, Kay persuaded Newton-Wellesley Hospital to create a domestic violence prevention program.
