The Boston Globe named student athletes to its fall All-Scholastic honors list

Three students from Newton SouthNewton North and Newton Country Day School were named in this year's Boston Globe Fall All-Scholastic Honors.

Newton South freshman Rebecca Grusby was recognized for her work on the South girls' cross country team. According to the All-Scholastic write-ups in the Globe, Grusby started the season by sweeping the freshman course at the Frank Kelly Invitational. In addition, she won the Bob McIntyre Twilight meet, finished second in the Dual County Championship and Eastern Mass. Division 1 race and finished fifth in the Div. 1 All-State meet.

Newton North senior Keane Brazda was honored as an All-Scholastic for her work on the girls' volleyball team. According to the Globe, Brazda had 300 assists and 250 kills this season, as the team made its way to the Div. 1 state finals. She also plays softball and soccer and was an AAU 16-U national champion. She has committed to Bucknell University for next year.

Newton Country Day School junior Maeve Westover was also recognized for her cross country efforts. According to the Globe, Westover won the New England Prep School Track Association Div. 3 cross country championship and was recognized as MVP of the Eastern Independent League. She also qualified for the national Junior Olympic championships

The All-Scholastic award recipients are "outstanding performers" throughout eastern Massachusetts sports, a Globe press release said. The awards are handed out for each of the three high school sport seasons: fall, winter and spring.

“These student-athletes are among the best in eastern Massachusetts,” Globe High School Sports Editor Bob Holmes said in a press release. “They remind us that hard work pays off, something they’ve illustrated through their athletic accomplishments.”

According to the press release, all Globe All-Scholastic winners are chosen by members of the Globe school sports staff. With the exception of prep school athletes, all students are members of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) teams in eastern Massachusetts. Prep school All-Scholastics were chosen by a group of coaches from the Independent School League and Eastern Independent League, the press release said.
