Newton Teachers Association Agrees on Contract with City

The Newton teachers agreed to a three-year deal tonight.

The Newton Teacher's Association has agreed to a contract with the city of Newton.

According to an email from Warren's political adviser Deborah Shah, the group "overwhelmingly ratified" the three-year contract.

In the email, Shah said the cost of the contract is consistent with all other municipal contracts settled earlier this year. The "landmark agreement" also keeps cost increases consistent with revenue increases, the email said.

The Newton Teachers Association (NTA) met tonight to vote on the new contract and according to its website, three out of five units passed the contract with a 100 percent positive vote. Unit A voted 97 percent in favor and Unit B voted 96 percent in favor.

The results from the night are tentative, the site points out, until they approved by the Newton Teachers Association Executive Committee.

At the School Committee meeting on Oct. 11, School Committee member Jonathan Yeo, who is the committee's contract liaison with the NTA, said the association was close to a contract and awaiting a final vote.

In early September, the NTA signed a memorandum of agreement with the negotation team saying that teachers agreed to delay raises due to them in the first few paychecks of the school year.

The contract will be officially passed after a School Committee vote, which is scheduled for Monday morning, Shah said. Details of the contract will be released after the meeting and during a press conference, which is scheduled for immediately after the vote.
