Planes, trains and automobiles? How about bicycles, MBTA trains and walking routes?

The city of Newton will be promoting alternate modes of transportation during its first ever Walk/Bike Week from September 28 - October 5. 

Throughout the Newton Walk/Bike Week, the city will offer a number of events, activities and workshops focused on getting residents out of their cars. The event, which was announced last week, is part of the city's 13 Villages, One Villages campaign launched earlier this summer

Friday, Sept. 28

• A ride from Newton City Hall to downtown Boston with the Newton Bicycle-Pedestrian Task Force.

• Earn rewards for biking, walking or taking public transit to work/school through the Green Streets Initiative rewards program. Retail partners include HipStitch, L'Aroma Cafe & Bakery, Inna's Kitchen, Dahlia's and Centre Ski & Bike.

Saturday, Sept. 29

• Newtonville Village Day with helmet and bike safety checks as well as information from the city's Transportation Advisory Group.

• A bike parade, dog parade and bike safety check with the Nonantum Neighborhood Association.

• A hike through the Sudbury and Cochituate Aqueducts with the Newton Conservators.

• A walking tour of Newton Upper Falls with Historic Newton and the Upper Falls Area Council.

Sunday, Sept. 30

• Bike repair working session from 10 a.m. - noon at International Bicycle.

• Bike4Life rides (20 miles, 40 miles or kids routes) with Livable Streets.

• A tour of the city's bike lanes with Bike Newton.

• A bike safety check with the Lower Falls Improvement Association.

• A bike census with Bike Newton.

• A street opening at Waban Avenue with the Waban Improvement Society.

• A "green city mural" on Lincoln Street with the Newton Highlands businesses.

Monday, Oct. 1

• Free classes for non-members at the West Suburban YMCA and reflective gear given to all those who walk or bike to the YMCA.

Wednesday, Oct. 3

• International Walk to School Day with the Newton Safe Routes to School Task Force.

• A bike census with Bike Newton.

All week

• Free passes to all those who walk or bike to the Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center.

• The Newton Safe Routes to School Task Force will collect gently-used shoes to donate to children in need.
