Newton's Herb Robinson Voices "Regular American" Views in Senate Debate

Debate held at UMass-Lowell Oct. 4 featured six Democratic candidates.

Fielding questions on everything from the economy and jobs to in-state tuition and marijuana legalization, the six Democratic candidates vying to take on Republican incumbent Scott Brown in next year’s U.S. Senate race engaged in a debate Tuesday night at UMass-Lowell.

Calling himself a regular American running for U.S. Senate, Newton resident and engineer Herb Robinson said he his first priority is fixing the economy and brining jobs back.

“My strength is that I’m not a career politician,” Robinson said.

Outside Durgin Hall prior to the debate, sign-holders were plentiful for candidates Elizabeth Warren and Brookline’s Alan Khazei, while smaller contingents were on hand to support Tom Conroy, Bob Massie, Marisa DeFranco and Robinson.

Here are some of the responses Robinson gave to questions asked during the debate, asked by a panel of four UMass-Lowell students, by a focus group of students and via Twitter.

  • “I believe marijuana should be legalized and sold just as alcohol is sold,” Robinson said.
  • Robinson supports President Obama’s jobs program, but doesn’t think it has enough stimulus spending in it. He believes tax rates should be varied depending on how the economy is doing.
  • Asked what superhero he’d be, Robinson said The Incredible Hulk.
  • Robinson believes in supporting a women’s right to choose.
  • “Budget cuts don’t help the economy, they hurt the economy,” he said.

Did you see the debate? Which candidate did you think answered the questions well?
