Patch Picks: Where to Buy School Supplies in Newton

Pencils and paper and notebooks- oh my! Make sure your student has everything needed to start the school year off right with our picks for where to outfit your offspring for the classroom.

Newton Public Schools start the 2011-2012 year on September 6. Whether you are a gleeful mom excited to reclaim your morning workout or a wistful dad sending your little one off to kindergarten for the first time, make sure your student heads to school with all of the right supplies.

Walgreens – Walgreens is currently running a number of school supply specials, according to their circular. Pick up some $0.99 composition or spiral-bound notebooks or some thin Sharpie markers, index cards, tape, eraser caps or #2 pencils all for just $0.39. With locations in Newton Highlands, Corner and Centre, you don’t have to go far for a good bargain.

Staples – Yes, technically it’s in Needham but this one-stop store is well worth a little extra driving. Not only can you pick up a supply list to work off, but you can also find that specific calculator your daughter’s math teacher requires and a different colored binder for every class for your well-organized son.

Leather World – If you need a backpack, computer case or even just a gym bag to quarantine your jock’s smelly socks, Leather World is the place to go.  You can find a wide assortment of the popular Kipling bags, Jansport backpacks and Briggs and Riley laptop bags at either the Newton Center or Newton Highlands locations.

CVS – Located in West Newton, Newton Highlands, Newton Upper Falls, Newton Center and Newtonville, you can shop for school supplies at CVS with ease. This week’s circular advertises such specials as white-out, Sharpies, filler paper and composition books at two for $3.00. Stock up now and be supplied until June.

Barnes and Noble – You can continue the debate as to whether the Chestnut Hill bookseller belongs to us or to Brookline, but you can’t argue that they have some of the cutest, most unique school supplies around. Matching notebooks, pencil cases, and planners can fill your child’s backpack or you can buy him/her a lapdesk to make working on the couch a little more comfy.

What happened to support local businesses??? Books are readily available from Newtonville Books...they will cheerfully and expeditiously order almost anything a student might need...Newtonville Books: what better place for students to buy books than from people who are students of books!

Absolutely LOVE Newtonville Books- my favorite place to buy books in the wider area, not just in Newton. However, this column wasn't about buying books for school; it was about buying school supplies. I'm pretty sure that as lovely and helpful as the folks at Newtonville Books are, they're not going to be ordering my kids any pencil sharpeners. ;)
