Police Cite Driver in Newton Centre Pedestrian Crash

A second pedestrian accident reportedly happened an hour later in the same intersection.

UPDATED 11:30 a.m. with additional information on a second pedestrian crash.

Newton Police have cited a 26-year-old female driver after she allegedly struck an elderly pedestrian in Newton Centre Monday night and left the accident scene without stopping. 

According to Newton Police Lt. Bruce Apotheker, the driver, who is from Newton, was cited with leaving the scene of an accident after causing personal injury.

Apotheker could not comment on the current condition of the pedestrian, but noted that the injuries are non-life threatening.

The accident occurred Monday around 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Centre Street and Langley Road. The driver, who was traveling northbound on Centre Street, struck a 94-year-old male pedestrian.

Apotheker said the pedestrian who was struck was not in the crosswalk at the time of the accident. 

The pedestrian was transported to Beth-Israel Hospital following the accident.

Initially, the driver did not stop at the scene and police were on the lookout for a silver Toyota. The car's side-view mirror was reportedly left at the scene, according to scanner reports. 

However, the driver contacted police roughly an hour after the accident. 

According to the Boston Globe, a second pedestrian crash occurred in that same intersection roughly an hour later

A 32-year-old Dedham woman struck a 90-year-old man crossing near the intersection of Centre and Pleasant streets, the Globe reported.

According to the Globe, the pedestrian sustained a shoulder injury and the driver was cited for failure to yield for a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
