Police: CVS Shoplifter Found with Pills, Cocaine
The shoplifting incident happened Monday morning at the CVS on Boylston Street.
The following information was supplied by the Newton Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.
A Dorchester man was arrested Monday after he allegedly stole several cans of baby formula from a CVS on Boylston Street in Newton.
Shane A. Whitsey, 41, of 58 Bowdoin Ave. #12, was also found to be in possession of a number of pills and several baggies containing a white powdered substance believed to be cocaine. He was also charged with possession of a class B drug, according to Newton Police.
According to police reports, officers responded to the CVS around 11:15 a.m. Monday for reports of a shoplifting incident. CVS employees told police the suspect (Whitsey) had stolen several cans of baby formula and fled across Route 9 (Boylston Street), heading westbound.
At the time, the only employees could only describe the suspect as a male wearing some type of glasses.
While canvassing the area, police did not spot any pedestrians on Route 9, but did see a man walking down Hartford Street, which is diagonally across from the CVS.
After spotting the man, police turned around on Route 9 and made right turn on to Harford Street, at which point they sounded the cruiser's air horn to get traffic to move out of the way.
When police sounded the horn, the individual on Hartford Street began to run, reports said, and police eventually caught up with him at the municipal lot on Hartford Street.
The man, who had a pair of sunglasses hanging out of the collar of his shirt, was carrying a CVS shopping bag containing several canisters of Enfamil baby formula. He was identified as Whitsey and placed under arrest.
Police found the pills and apparent cocaine while searching Whitsey during his booking, reports said.
