Poll: Will You Still Support Susan G. Komen?

The not-for-profit's decision to sever its relationship with Planned Parenthood sparked a range of reactions. Komen reportedly reversed its decision Friday.

[Update 11:27 a.m.: Susan G. Komen for the Cure has just announced it is reversing its decision, according to a number of sources. See the CNN story for details.]

Posted earlier:

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure, well known for rallying people behind its work to find a cure for breast cancer, has divided people this week with its decision to stop providing funding to Planned Parenthood for breast exams.

Representatives of Komen say the reason was because Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congress, but Planned Parenthood advocates point out that the investigation is led by a conservative Republican backed by anti-abortion groups.

Planned Parenthood has more than 800 health centers across the nation and is the largest provider of abortions in the country. The organization provides affordable reproductive health care for women and men, as well as cancer screenings, including 4 million breast exams in the last 5 years. Supporters have rallied to aid Planned Parenthood in response to the loss of funding from Komen.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the largest foundation dedicated to education and research about causes, treatment, and the search for a cure.

The two organizations had been working in partnership since 2005 to provide breast cancer screenings.

Komen sponsors events to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research around the country, including one in Massachusetts, with opening ceremonies held in Framingham.

Will Komen's decision to cut ties with Planned Parenthood affect your participation in Komen's fundraisers? Will you send your money to Planned Parenthood instead? Take our poll.

As a breast cancer survivor and contributor to Susan G. Komen, I was surprised that my support aided in the killing of unborn infants. I thought my money was going to help breast cancer patients. I am very disappointed in the foundation!

Deborah,
I am with you! I was sick when I found out that SGK for the cure was associated with Planned Parenthood and other organizations like them. I have for years donated money for walks, merchandise, to sponsor others who are raising money and worst of all in loved ones names who have passed due to cancer. NEVER again will they get so much as a dime from me. I have to laugh when people post things like the money is going toward mamograms when PP doesn't even offer mamograms as a service. I feel duped by SGK and I am disgusted that they are not made to disclose their associations. Sadly, this has impacted me so greatly I will think twice before donating to a charity again.

Hi Deborah, how are you? I don't think people's support of Susan G. Komen directly supported abortions. Susan G. Komen was providing Planned Parenthood with funds to perform breast exams, which is another one of the services they provide. The controversy was with the fact that Planned Parenthood also performs abortions, and that is why Komen was initially pushed to stop giving them funds to perform breast exams.

At least according to an Ezra Klein Washington Post blog/chart, breast cancer screenings make up about 16 percent of what Planned Parenthood does. By comparison, "abortion services" accounts for about 3 percent.

Jesika: Why won't anyone else comment on the Two schools one book fiasco? The arrest of the books main character for severely beating his wife is definitely worthy of an article considering the patch covered the event itself. I think it is very sad that our kids are getting an agenda driven education in Newton, but it is far more sad when the leaders of our public schools will not admit when they have failed. Our kids spent a considerable amount of time being told what a great guy Zeitoun was, so much so they skipped a day of school to talk about him. What is the lesson our kids are suppose to learn here? If you pretend like something never happened and don't comment on it, all will be well. The real lesson of Zeitoun is turning into a very embarrassing one with the assistance of the two Newton High Schools and their look the other way attitude. Please don't join them in ignoring this issue

Hi Kenny --

Thank you for your comment and information. We can certainly look into this information you have provided, but keep in mind we will have to verify everything with the police and courts before posting stories related to arrests or charges, as we cannot post articles on claims or rumors. Also, we try to keep things as "hyperlocal" here as possible and make sure that the content is as specific to Newton as possible.

If you have news tips, ideas for a story, a Letter to the Editor or information to share please in the future email me directly at Melanie.Graham@patch.com. Thank you!

Thanks for the quick response Melanie!!! I believe that this story couldn't be anymore "Hyper local" considering over 3,800 Newton High school students skipped a day of learning to discuss this man Zeitoun who was repeatedly lauded as a hero to our students. If you guys covered the "Two Books" day, why wouldn't you cover this major and unfathomable (by most) development? He was arrested a while ago and his case already cleared the courts, Please let me know your thoughts... http://www.thesmokinggun.com/file/zeitoun-arrest-report?page=0

I am 100% in support of Planned Parenthood and the good they do for women and men. SGK was wise to retract their initial statement.

I never supported Komen. I believe in all Cancer research and that is what I support. I do not support any non-profit organization that contributes to any political party. That is not what the donated money is for. And what is the Government doing by giving money to a non-profit organization such as Planned Parenthood or any non profit for that matter. For their support during elections.

No. They've said they will "allow" Planned Parenthood to re-apply. They have not reversed their decision. And their still being run by anti-choice zealots.

Lung cancer charity threatened by Komen over use of "Cure."

"It happened to my family," said Roxanne Donovan, whose sister runs Kites for a Cure, a family kite-flying event that raises money for lung cancer research. "They came after us ferociously with a big law firm. They said they own 'cure' in a name and we had to stop using it, even though we were raising money for an entirely different cause."

I was also surprised to find the SGK sends money to PP. I will never contribute to SGK or any one who walks/runs/etc in one of their events. I don't care if PP has diversified their operations to include something the general public is OK with - the heart of their business; the purpose of their organization is death of an innocent life. And of course, now Obama, the president most aggressive in killing innocent lives even if they survive an abortion, is trying to make it a requirement that every company including Christian churches pay for abortion services through OBAMACare.

SGK guilty by association. You are who you associate with. SGK became a part of the pro-death-of-an-innocent-life movement .... apparently back in 2005. Who knew? It's public now. I look forward to watching the decline of both organizations and the rise of a group that really cares for the life and health of women.

And I agree with Stringfellow. The whole financial model of a non-profit organization is to get support from the community, not from the government's distribution of money it collects from tax payers. If tax payers want to support a non-profit, they do that and take a tax cut for doing it. It makes no sense for the government to give a non-profit money. If the non-profit doesn't have enough money to operate, its because the community doesn't support it. If PP can't live without government funds, its bc people don't believe in it enough to support it.

Hey CPT! My name is Debbie. Interesting to have someone who doesn't reveal a name make a comment about deleting comments from people who don't have a name as their "handle". Does your real issue have to do with the fact that I used a sentence rather than a name or do you simply disagree with my statement and wish for it to be deleted?

We miss you dude. Nobody takes on Town Hall like you used to. The TM set one reporter up to get her fired and ever since the editor has been to scared to write anything critical about the TM or TC. Kinda like living in North Korea, except the food is worse in Watertown.

Thanks for saying that, Sonny. I always felt like I could have been tougher on Town Hall. I remember Mr. Driscoll particularly disliking an editorial where I compared trying to figure out what was really going on in Town Hall to Kremlinology.
