According to Newton Police Lt. Bruce Apotheker, a detective was returning evidence to a home Friday afternoon when he spotted the two men in the 350 Block of Dedham Street.
The detective, Apotheker said, was returning evidence to a home where a break-in had occurred earlier in the week.
When the detective approached the two men Friday to speak with them, the men fled on foot. The detective attempted to grab one suspect's backpack, but failed to restrain him.
Apotheker said the suspects were described as two white males. One was "well-groomed" with dark hair, had a "Chinese" tattoo on his arm and was wearing a white t-shirt, plaid shorts and a backpack. The other suspect was only described as wearing a blue shirt with black trim and a black #24 on the back.
The man in the plaid shorts reportedly fled to a home on Leewood Road, Apotheker said, and asked a resident for a ride to the Newton Highlands MBTA stop. The resident gave the man a ride to the T stop, where the man reportedly got in a taxi cab and went to Cleveland Circle.
The Leewood Road resident told police that the man had blood on his hands, Apotheker said.
The other suspect was not found.
Detectives are still investigating, Apotheker said, and anyone with any information is urged to call the Newton Police at 617-796-2100 or the department's anonymous tips line at 617-796-2121.
