Police searched the Dedham Street area Friday afternoon after the men fled a Newton Police detective who tried to speak with them.
UPDATED 4:33 p.m.
Newton Police are currently looking for two men who fled police Friday afternoon after a detective tried to question the men near Dedham Street.
According to Newton Police Lt. Bruce Apotheker, a detective was returning evidence to a home Friday afternoon when he spotted the two men in the 350 Block of Dedham Street.
The detective, Apotheker said, was returning evidence to a home where a break-in had occurred earlier in the week.
When the detective approached the two men Friday to speak with them, the men fled on foot. The detective attempted to grab one suspect's backpack, but failed to restrain him.
Apotheker said the suspects were described as two white males. One was "well-groomed" with dark hair, had a "Chinese" tattoo on his arm and was wearing a white t-shirt, plaid shorts and a backpack. The other suspect was only described as wearing a blue shirt with black trim and a black #24 on the back.
The man in the plaid shorts reportedly fled to a home on Leewood Road, Apotheker said, and asked a resident for a ride to the Newton Highlands MBTA stop. The resident gave the man a ride to the T stop, where the man reportedly got in a taxi cab and went to Cleveland Circle.
The Leewood Road resident told police that the man had blood on his hands, Apotheker said.
The other suspect was not found.
Detectives are still investigating, Apotheker said, and anyone with any information is urged to call the Newton Police at 617-796-2100 or the department's anonymous tips line at 617-796-2121.
Newton Police units are currently canvassing the Dedham Street area for two possible break-in suspects, according to scanner reports.
State Police helicopters are also searching the area, reports said, and a number of police units are gathering near Dedham Street, Parker Street and Woodcliff Road to look for the reported suspect(s).
One suspect was described as a white male wearing a white shirt with plaid shorts and a black backpack. Another suspect was reportedly a white male wearing a black and blue shirt with a #24 on the back, scanner reports said.
As of 2:40 p.m. the scanner is reporting that Newton Police received information that one suspect may have got in a Veterans Taxi Co. minivan and was taken to the bus station in Kenmore Square. Newton and Boston Police are working to pull over a #57 bus that one of the suspects may be on.
Update 2:58 p.m. - Scanner reports indicate that the suspects were never on the MBTA bus that police pulled over to search. The perimeter around Dedham Street is still in place.
A resident on Leewood Road told police he/she picked up one of the suspects and dropped him off at the Newton Highlands T station around 2:20 p.m. That suspect was described as wearing a white shirt, plaid shorts (blue, grey, yellow in color), had a "Chinese" tattoo down his arm and was bleeding from his lip and his hands.
Update 3:10 p.m. - Countryside Elementary School's after school program reportedly went into lockdown during the Dedham Street search, scanner reports said. The lockdown has since been cleared.
Updated 3:15 p.m. - Units are now clearing the Parker Street/Dedham Street area and State Police units have been cleared.
Patch will have more information as it becomes available. Stay tuned.
