Skipjack's in Newton Closes its Doors

The Needham Street restaurant closed Monday.

After 15 years in Newton, Skipjack's on Needham Street has closed up shop.

The Newton Highlands seafood restaurant closed Monday, leaving a note on its front door for patrons. The letter reads:

To our friends and loyal guests:

After being a part of the Newton community for many years we are sad to inform you that Skipjack's is now closed. We would like to thank everyone for their patronage over the last 15 years.

55 Needham St. has been purchased by a new owner and subsequently the lease has expired. As one chapter closes a new one opens for the development of this property.

Please visit us at our oldest location in Boston's Back Bay at 199 Claredon St. or at our newest location in Foxborough at Patriot Place.

Thank you, it has been fun and rewarding to be a part of the Newton community. We will miss you.

In a brief conversation with Newton Patch Sunday evening, a manager who answered the phone at the restaurant confirmed the eatery was closing, but could not provide any additional details.

Although the Newton location was listed on the Skipjack's website Sunday, it was removed by Monday.

According to the Skipjack's Facebook page, which posted a similar letter to customers, the restaurant owners are "committed to finding a new location in the area."

What do you think about Skipjack's closing? What are you hoping will move into the new space? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

By far one of the truly best places. I hope another seafood restaurant of this caliber will come to Newton.

Skipjack's Newton was such a welcomed alternative to Legal Seafood. Please come back!

Dining on Needham st is not high up on my list and never went. That street needs fixing.

Serves them right for dropping the ginger calamari from the menu.

So many memorable family and friend get togethers and special moments spent over the past 12 years at Skipjacks Newton. Hopefully an equally great seafood place will fill the shoes left behind on Needham Street, of equal service, and quality of food and wait staff.

While I will admit I was never much of a fish eater, I always got a great meal at Skipjack's. As an aside note, I still miss the restaurant that was there prior. Tang Dynasty, smiley and the gang.

We went away for three weeks and came back to three favorite restaurants in the Needham/Newton area closed. Skipjack had wonderful fish and delightful chopped salad. It will be missed.
