Forecast Update: Snow Forecast For Boston Trimmed Back to 1-2 Inches

Bitter temperatures will follow the storm on Sunday.

Updated 2/11 9:45 a.m.

The National Weather Service is predicting Newton will get only 1 to 2 inches of snow during Saturday's expected storm.

Snow likely, mainly before 3pm. Patchy fog before 11am. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 36. North wind between 3 and 10 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Total daytime snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Another weather predictor, the Weather Underground, forecasts we'll only get an inch.

On Friday, forecasters had called for 2 to 4 inches of snow for Boston, sparking hopes of finally building snowmen or breaking out the cross-country skis during one of the warmest winters on record.

Don't let the bare ground outside your window fool you. Winter is still here and it's about to prove that to local residents on Saturday.

There is a good chance most of Massachusetts, including Newton, will see accumulating snow as a low-pressure system moves up the East Coast, tracking south of New England, according to the National Weather Service.

The combination of the storm's track, along with Arctic air sinking from the north, will bring accumulating snow to the region.

Winter weather advisories will likely be needed for a large portion of Southern New England.

Early Friday afternoon the NWS predicted 2-4 inches for Saturday. But a shift in the storm's track could change the type of wintry precipitation and amounts.

As of 8:45 a.m. Friday, local meteorologists made the following predictions:

  • WHDH Ch. 7 — 1-3 inches
  • WCVB Ch. 5 — 2-4 inches
  • WBZ Ch. 4 — 2-4 inches
  • Fox Ch. 25 — 1-3 inches

Residents can also expect strong wind from the north to northwest.

Temperatures on Sunday will be bitter, with highs only in the 20s and a low in the lower teens.

Patch will provide updates on the storm should they be needed.
