State Sec. of Education Matt Malone Visits His Alma Mater, Newton North [PHOTO/VIDEO]

Malone, who grew up in Newton Upper Falls, visited his alma mater Monday morning--just a few hours before he was sworn into office. The newly-appointed secretary of education toured classrooms and talked with teachers about closing achievement gaps.

Jan. 14, 2013 - On his first official day of work, newly-appointed Secretary of Education Matt Malone talks with career & tech ed teacher Andrea Shurtleff at Newton North High School and looks at hand-drawn examples from the drafting class. Malone, who grew up in Newton Upper Falls, was a drafting major when he attended Newton North in the 1980s. Just a few hours after his visit on Monday, Malone was officially sworn into his new position.

Jan. 14, 2012 - Newton Upper Falls native (and current Roslindale resident) Matt Malone was appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick late last year as the state's next secretary of education. For his first day on the job -- and just hours before being sworn in -- Malone visited his alma mater: Newton North High School. Malone toured the school and sat down with teachers and administrators to talk about North's efforts in closing achievement gaps in students. A classmate with Mayor Setti Warren at North in the 1980s. He was a member of the wrestling team and had a drafting major at North.
