A Newton elementary school teacher facing child pornography charges has resigned, Superintendent David Fleishman said this evening.

David Ettlinger, 34, was a second grade teacher at Underwood Elementary School and taught in the Newton Public Schools for 12 years. He is currently held in jail on $100,000 bail and faces charges of possession of child pornography, indecent assault and battery on a child and posing a child in the nude. 

Fleishman said Ettlinger turned in his resignation papers Tuesday evening. 

Ettlinger was arrested at his Boston home on Jan. 17 after a "long-term" federal investigation. In addition to state charges, he also faces federal charges out of Louisiana due to his involvement with a child pornography site known as "Dreamboard." 

The Newton Public Schools placed Ettlinger on leave following his arrest and Superintendent David Fleishman indicated that week the district was taking steps to fire the teacher. 

According Boston.com, Ettlinger turned in his resignation a day before a scheduled hearing on his termination. 

After Ettlinger's arrest, a series of meetings were held with local parents and community members. The most recent meeting was held last Tuesday at Newton North High School and included information from local psychologists, school officials and police. 

A day after that meeting, local library staffer Peter Buchanan was also arrested on child pornography charges, which stemmed from an investigation by the Massachusetts Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Buchanan, 47, worked as an audio/video classifier at the Newton Free Library and had been employed with the city for 10 years.
