Ten Things You Need to Know This Week: Nov. 26-Dec. 2
School Committee, Riverside Station public hearing, Angier project discussion, a tree lighting, Stroll & Shop and more.
1. School Committee
The Newton School Committee will meet on Monday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Education Center. Monday night's meeting will be jam-packed with the official enrollment analysis as well as some short-term space recommendations to handle the growing student population. 2. Newton Preservation Awards
Historic Newton teams up each year with the Newton Historical Commission to present awards recognizing projects which feature the preservation of Newton’s historic buildings and landscapes, and promote awareness of Newton’s historic fabric. These awards, the Newton Preservation Awards, will be held Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Boston College Alumni House (825 Centre St.)
3. Boston College station meeting
The MBTA is looking to upgrade and renovate the Boston College T station (the end of the Green B Line). A meeting on the project will be held Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. in room 222 at City Hall.
4. Riverside Station public hearing
The Board of Aldermen's Land Use Committee will continue its public hearing this week on the proposed mixed-use development at the Riverside Station MBTA site. The hearing will be held Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Aldermanic Chamber at City Hall.
Ward 3 Alderman-at-Large Ted Hess-Mahan mentioned at last week's full board meeting that a representative from the MBTA has agreed to sit in on the Riverside public hearing and answer some questions.
5. Nonantum community meeting
Mayor Setti Warren is holding a series of community meetings across the city to discuss ways to make villages "beautiful, safe and livable" communities. The next meeting will be held Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the community room at Jackson Gardens (JFK Circle) in Nonantum.
6. Angier rebuilding project
Following last week's presentation to the Board of Aldermen and School Committee, the Angier School Building Committee and the city's Design Review Committee will hold a meeting on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. in the Aldermanic Chamber at City Hall. This meeting will include a review of the site strategy and design massing for the school.
7. Committee of the Whole meeting
The Newton Board of Aldermen will meet in a Committee of the Whole on Thursday, Nov. 29 in the Aldermanic Chamber at Newton City Hall. The meeting will include continued discussion on the proposed override package.
8. Arts Stroll & Shop
The Newton Cultural Alliance has teamed up with the city, the Newton-Needham Chamber of Commerce and Birthday Wishes to present the second annual Arts Stroll & Shop in Newton Centre. The event will take place on Sunday, Dec. 2 from noon - 6 p.m. and will include special deals at local shops, restaurants as well as art displays and community concerts.
9. Nonantum tree lighting
Every year, the giant Santa Claus goes up in Coletti-Magni Park for Nonantum's annual tree lighting and parade. According to NewTV, this year's Nonantum tree lighting will take place on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 6:30 p.m.
10. Celebrate Newton Craft Fair
The Celebrate Newton Craft Fair will take place on Sunday, Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Newton South High School. The event will include a number of local artists and crafters as well as a kids' craft table, food and live music. Admission is $3.
