Tournament Update: Lions, Tigers Finish Exciting Seasons
An update on the latest MIAA tournament games played by teams at Newton North and Newton South.
After one of the more exciting seasons in the school's recent history, the Newton North baseball team made its way to the North Div. 1 finals Saturday evening at LeLacheur Park in Lowell.
The Tigers, who faced the top-ranked Lowell team, fell in a close 2-1 game.
The loss, though, is only a small blemish on what was an impressive run through the tournament bracket; ranked No. 22 (out of 23 teams), the Newton North team beat the odds to make it to the final game.
Prior to Saturday's match against Lowell, the Tigers defeated No. 7 Acton-Boxborough 8-7 in the division semifinals and No. 3 St. John's Prep 7-4 in the quarterfinals. Before that, North had a comeback 5-4 win against Billerica in the first round of the tournament and a 10-7 preliminary round victory over Lexington.
Overall, the Tigers finish the season 14-11.
After finishing up an impressive sectional tournament run, the Newton North boys volleyball team headed to the state semifinals Friday evening as the South Div. 1 champions.
The Tigers, who defeated Newton South in the division finals, faced Milford, the Central Mass. Div. 1 champions.
Despite the strong run of victories this season, the Newton North boys were not able to hold off the 21-0 Milford team and fell in the state semifinals, 3-0.
The Tigers finish the season 19-2 overall.
The No. 5-ranked Newton South girls tennis team headed into the North Div. 1 semifinals Friday afternoon, facing the No. 9-ranked Chelmsford.
Keeping up their winning streak, the Lions defeated Chelmsford 4-0 to move on to the division finals against No. 3-ranked Acton-Boxborough.
Despite their best efforts, though, the Newton South girls could not hold off the A-B team and fell 4-1.
The Newton South girls tennis team finishes the season 18-6 overall.
After taking home some top honors at the all-state meet last week, a few of the Newton North and Newton South runners made their way to the New England Championship Outdoor Track Meet on Saturday (June 9) at Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine.
Below are some of the highlights from the meet:
- Newton North junior Ryan Lucken finished seventh in the 400 meter dash
- Newton North senior Swardick Mayanja finished second in the shot put and fifth in the discus throw
- Newton South junior Kyra Visnik finished 11th in the pole vault
