Proia also offered other safety tips residents should keep in mind during the blizzard.

Feb. 8, 2013 - During a pre-blizzard press conference at Newton Fire Headquarters Friday, Newton Fire Chief Bruce Proia reminds residents to check batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors during the storm. Proia also offered other safety tips residents should keep in mind during the blizzard.
Feb. 8, 2013 - Interim Police Chief Howard Mintz urges residents to make any 911 calls from a land line, if possible. Cell phone calls are routed through the State Police and could increase response time. In addition, Mintz urged residents to stay off the roads, as cars could get stuck and create safety hazards for emergency responders.
