Visions for Vacancies: 313 Walnut St., Newtonville (Former Jin Mi Market)
What does this empty space in Newtonville need?
Welcome to Visions for Vacancies, a Patch feature and a place where you can weigh in with your ideas about what kind of businesses you’d like to see occupying empty storefronts around Newton.
Each week, we’ll highlight a vacant building, storefront or structure around the city. Then, we’ll leave it you, the Newton community, to sound off on what you’d like to see there.
This week we’re at 313 Walnut St. in Newtonville, the former Jin Mi Oriental Foods Market.
We've been to this area before; a few weeks back we asked you what you thought of the former All About Shoe location a couple of doors down. But now, we want to hear your thoughts on this empty space.
The business is located between a salon and the recently renovated George Howell Coffee.
There are a number of parking options for this location, including a municipal (metered) lot, on-street metered parking and some (time limited) free street parking.
Newtonville has certainly been an area for change lately, with the new John Brewer's location opening up across the street, Rox Diner looking to expand its seating and a frozen yogurt cafe set to move in to the former Twig location.

anything but a BANK!

This is kind of a tricky one for me. Newtonville has pretty good variety right now. I agree with Ann, definitely not a bank! I miss Newtonville Books being actually in Newtonville, but IIRC this space is pretty small and narrow.

Some of these small storefronts can be a challenge -- but I wonder if we can think outside the retail box? Maybe there's something that can go in there that's not a store or a restaurant...or a bank.

From Buzz and Margie Binbaum (via email): We think a terrific greeting card shop is needed and would be a perfect fit!

I am looking for space to put books, art, antiques. This would be an eclectic mix of very wide price range. Maybe it's a crazy idea in this economy. Vintage paperbacks might start at $5. Books might top out at $2200, antiques at $11,500. Music and ghosts would be on hand for atmosphere. Is this just a financially self-destructive fantasy??

David Aust's idea appeals to me. How about starting a new trend and helping the housing situation. I would love to have people be able to lease village street level apartments.
