Each week, we’ll highlight a vacant building, storefront or structure around the city. Then, we’ll leave it you, the Newton community, to sound off on what you’d like to see there.
This week we’re at 275 Needham St., Marshalls Plaza.
This plaza is in one of the city's major shopping districts: the Needham Street corridor. Despite the large amount of retail traffic, there are a couple of empty storefront in this plaza, including the one pictured to the right.
Other businesses in this plaza include Marshalls, CVS and Fresh City.
As for parking, there is a large lot for the plaza that includes plenty of room for shoppers. The traffic on Needham Street, though, can be a challenge.

Just as I suggested for the Newtonville vacancy, I would like to see a KITCHEN GADGET, HOUSEWARES Store in this location. Do we dedect a theme?

The whole mall should be leveled, and we should start a massive effort to improve Needham Street, and turn it into a hub like Linden Street in Wellesley. There is no reason why our town should have such a mish mash of ugliness, other than bad zoning laws. Filene's Basement should be leveled too. Now is the time.

And you would suggest what? Unless you have a solution, you are part of the problem. Oh, by the way, Newton is a CITY, not a town.

Mark, I fear that with their sister stores Marshall's and TJ Maxx already in the area, this would only mean a Home Goods rather than something more desirable and upscale. Plus, it would mean serious competition for the wonderful, underutilized China Fair. No one wants a good kitchen gadget or housewares store in Newton more than I do (heck, I'd even cover the opening in my column!), but I am not sure that is the right location.

Unfortunetly you are mostly correct. It is a little too small for a Home Goods and too large for a Kitchen Gadget/Housewares store. Even one that had a great selection of cookbooks. Although, if we add a selection of gourmet food products....it woud be a possibility. China Fair has long served it purpose. But they are mostly thought of for special buys, overstocks, and the like. Plus, if you are looking for just that perfect piece for a wedding present, China Fair is the place. (Or Place Setting!) And just how badly do you want a Housewares Store? Would that desire be powerful enough to finance a shop at the vacancy in Newtonville?

Mark, you grossly overestimate my gross income if you think I can finance anything other than my own housewares habit :)
You are right about the space being too small for a HomeGoods, now that I think about it - although P Dolan's post reminds me that the Filene's Basement spots are both still open, so they might end up HomeGoods'ed.
China Fair is so wonderful and quirky and I feel like so few people in the area really know about it. Hmm... I wonder if I should do a story on *them*

I did not grossly overestimate. I simply never estimated at all. Was it was you who remembered that I once wrote for my magazine! And besides, that request for funding was in reality a general request meant for the general public who might like to find a worth whiloe project if they have some money just sititng sround the house, not doing anything useful. You know, like a teenager sits around the house, maybe they have some money in that age range?
