Mayor Setti Warren held a press conference Monday afternoon to announce the new chief of the Newton Police Department.

March 18, 2013 - Mayor Setti Warren talks a bit about the chief search process. Warren told reporters at press conference Monday that the process involved looking at internal candidates first. If the internal candidates had not met the police chief criteria, the city would have then gone out to look at outside applicants. Warren said five males from the Newton Police Department applied for the chief position.

Mayor Setti Warren has appointed Newton Police Capt. Howard Mintz as the Newton Police Department's new chief.

Mintz, a 29-year veteran of the department, has been acting chief since late August 2012, when former Chief Matthew Cummings was placed on administrative leave.

Cummings, the department's previous chief, was placed on administrative leave in August after an investigation concluded there was "sufficient" evidence that he verbally humiliated his secretary and kicked her in the foot. Warren eventually fired Cummings in October following a public hearing process.
