Week in Review: Angier News, CDBG, and Former Teacher Faces More Charges

- Two Newton stores recently failed a tobacco compliance check conducted by the city Health & Human Services Department.

- At a special School Committee meeting Monday night, officials talked about the next steps with the rebuilding of Angier Elementary School and how the project is on a "fast track" now that the MSBA has invited Newton to apply for a grant program.
- Another interesting police log came in at the start of this week. One item gave details on the arrest of a shoplifter who was wanted on seven warrants.
- Newton mock trial teams continued with their success in the state tournament this week.
- Mayor Setti Warren invited HUD Assistant Secretary Mercedes Marquez to a roundtable discussion Tuesday at the Newton Boys & Girls Club. The discussion, which included a number of Newton community leaders, focused on Community Development Block Grant funding (CDBG) and its importance in community programs.
- A former Newton teacher who is already facing a number of state and federal child pornography charges now faces more charges out of Middlesex County. He was arraigned and held on $50,000 cash bail Wednesday.
- Sean Fitzgibbons announced this week he plans to run for chair of the Newton Democratic City Committee. On Saturday, the NDCC held its annual caucus and showed support for Senate Candidate Elizabeth Warren, according to Warren's campaign.
- A presentation Wednesday night on the I-95 "Add-a-Lane" project brought forward concerns from aldermen and residents; many are concerned about how the project will affect local traffic as well as safety for pedestrians and bikers.
- In Fourth District news this week, a new candidate joined the race, Joe Kennedy III moved to Brookline and a UMass-Boston Herald poll showed that Kennedy is an early favorite in the race.
